Avramenko and Andersson won the first medals going through the new Medal Match

The Medal Matches concluded the 10m Running Targets events. Ukraine’s Galina AVRAMENKO shot Gold at the 10m Running Target Women event, winning her second individual competition during this World Championships of Pilsen. Sweden finished again on the podium thanks to Emil ANDERSSON who won Gold in the 10m Running Target Men event by exploiting the new Medal Match formula.

The new “Medal Match” stages closed the 10m Running Target competitions, at the 2008 ISSF World Championships in Running Target events of Pilsen, in Czech Republic.
The “Medals Match” has been introduced since the beginning of the 2008 season, and is a further stage in the 10m events: after the regular competition, the four best shooters proceed to a direct-elimination competition to decide the podium placements.
The first qualified faces the fourth, the second faces the third. After every shot, the shooter who has scored the highest is awarded one point. The winner of the duel is decided out of ten shots.
The two winners meet then for Gold and Silver, while the two losers keep on shooting for Bronze.

The 10m Running Target Women event ended up in a victory of Ukraine. The 22-year old shooter Galina AVRAMENKO, silver medallist of the 2006 World Championships of Zagreb, gained the Gold after leading the qualification and winning the medal matches.
The Ukrainian shooter turned out to be the most successful shooter of this World Championships so far, with two Gold won in individual events (10m Running Target and 10m Running Target mixed), a two team Gold won in the Mixed Grand Prix.
During today’s competition, AVRAMENKO confirmed to be in excellent shape by finishing the qualification with the highest score of 382 points, entering the first Medal Match were she defeated the German shooter Elena NEFF 6 to 3 points. The Ukrainian shooter keep on shooting for the Gold against Russia’s Julia EYDENZON, winning also this second duel with a score of 6 to 2 points.
Silver went to EYDENZON, while the Medal Match for Bronze was won by the 21-year old German shooter Eleana NEFF, who shoot-off her teammate Daniela FAUST 6 to 2.

The Swedish shooter Emil ANDERSSON won the 10m Running Target Men event, taking great advantage of the Medal Match formula. The Swedish athlete had indeed entered the top-four with the lowest qualification score of 577 points but, shooting excellent shots, he made it to the highest step of the podium trough the Medal Match duels.
ANDERSSON first shot-off the qualification leader Vladyslav PRIANISHNIKOV 6 to 3 points, and then outraced the Czech shooter Miroslav JANUZ 6 to 1, winning his first World Champion title in this event. The Swedish shooter had won a Bronze medal at the 10m Running Target Mixed competition, two days ago, saying “I feel stronger on the 50m distance”, the competition which is going to start tomorrow.
Silver went to the home shooter JANUZ, while Bronze was awarded to Ukraine’s PRIANISHNIKOV, who outdid 6 to 5 points the Swedish finalist Niklas BERGSTROEM, fourth today.

The conclusive balance of the 10m Running Target event turned in favour of Ukraine, that won both World Championships Men Team competitions and the team’s Pilsen Women Grand Prix.
Ukraine’s Vladyslav PRIANISHNIKOV, Andrey GILCHENKO and Alexander ZINENKO won the Men’s team Gold with a total of 1726 points, preceding Czech Republic (second with 1714 points) and Russia, third with 1711 points.
