Rio de Janeiro to host the 2016 Games

October 19th, 2009 No comments

IOC WEB BANNER LANDSCAPE POSRio de Janeiro was elected as the 2016 Olympic Games host city during the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark.

ISSF President Mr. Olegario Vazquez Raña took part in the 121st IOC Session held in Copenhagen that has elected Rio De Janeiro as the host city of the

Games of the XXXI Olympiad in 2016.

After the first selections that excluded Chicago and Tokio, Rio de Janeiro received 66 votes, compared to Madrid’s 32, in the final vote. Following its participation in the 2004 and 2012 bids, Brazil will host the first Olympic and Paralympics Games of its history in 2016.

IOC President Jacques Rogge congratulated Rio de Janeiro on its election, praising the high quality of the bid, “I would like to congratulate the city of Rio de Janeiro on its election as the host of the 2016 Olympic Games. Rio de Janeiro presented the IOC with a very strong technical bid, built upon a vision of the Games being a celebration of the athletes and sport, as well as providing the opportunity for the city, region and country to deliver their broader long-term aspirations for the future. This call to “live your passion” clearly struck a chord with my fellow members and we now look forward to seeing Rio de Janeiro stage the first Olympic Games on the continent of South America. Well done, Rio!”

The ISSF President Mr. Olegario Vazquez Raña, the ISSF Secretary General Horst G. Schreiber and ISSF Authorities will now participate in the XIII Olympic Congress, starting today in Copenhagen. IOC Members, representatives of International Federations, athletes, referees and Organizing Committees for Olympic Games will evaluate and discuss topics connected to the congress’s main theme “Olympic Movement in Society”.

Enormous success for STEYR Sportwafen

March 29th, 2009 5 comments

It was more than exciting – but then it was not. In the final of the air pistol contest for women, no one asked whether STEYR would gain a medal or how many we would gain – the only question was, who of our female shooters would be the first three!

All three medals – gold, silver, bronze – were won by STEYR-ladies!

Gold went to the “shooting star” of the last months, Wenjun GUO, the young Chinese, who did not only take advantage of the fact, that she shot “at home”, she also won the latest two World Cups in Munich and Milan. With 492,3 rings she also made a new Final Olympic Record!Natalja PADERINA, long-time STEYR shooter and friend of us, shot herself to silver and – with 391 rings in thequalification – to a new Olympic Record, her second big success after gaining the gold medal at the IWK in Munich.Bronze was won by Nino SALUKVADZE from Georgia, she is also shooting STEYR pistols for years already, at the IWK in Munich she finished second, gaining the silver medal.

What is most remarkable:

All eight finalists shot with STEYR-technology!Every single of these world-best female shooters used an air pistol made at STEYR Sportwaffen to come that far!

As for the men:

Gold and silver at the air pistol men’s event go to STEYR!Wei PANG from China gained the most beautiful noble metal, high up there on the podium, just a bit behind Jong Oh JIN from Corea – another highly contented STEYR-shooter!

National Governing Bodies are responsible for the sport within their own country and for selecting eligible athletes to appear in both international events and the Olympic Games.

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), formally the Union Internationale de Tir (UIT), is the international governing body responsible for both promoting international shooting sport and for providing its Rules and Regulations. Olympic history

January 13th, 2009 No comments

Shooting has been contested at most of the Olympic Games. The sport first appeared in 1896. There were also events in 1900, but none were contested during the 1904 and 1928 Games.

The programme has varied just as much as any of the other sports (with the possible exception of sailing/yachting). In 1908, 1912, 1920 and 1924 there were dozens of events, including multiple team events. Thus it was possible for shooters to win many medals at these Olympics. After a hiatus in 1928, the sport returned to the Olympics in 1932 with only two events – one for pistols and one for rifles. Since World War II the programme has become relatively standardised.

Women were first allowed to compete in Olympic shooting in 1968. In that year Mexico, Peru and Poland each entered one female contestant. In 1984 the International Shooting Union (UIT) now called the ISSF – International Shooting Sport Federation introduced separate events for women. Between 1984 and 1992 the number of women’s events increased gradually. In addition, several of the events on the programme remained mixed, i.e. open to both men and women. As of 1996 in Atlanta, the shooting programme was segregated, with men’s events being separated from the women’s.
