Ukraine’s Prianishnikov and Russia’s Romanov followed him in second and third place.

29-year old Emil ANDERSSON of Sweden shot his second, consecutive, World Champion title, winning the 10m Running Target Men Gold medal as he had done one year ago in Plzen. The Swedish Champion confirmed to be the best shooter of the world in this event, winning the two direct-elimination duels of the Medal Match with ease.

Anderson climbed through the Medal Match

ANDERSSON qualified for the Medal Match in third place, with a qualification score of 578 points, ranking behind Finland’s Krister HOLMBERG and Russia’s Dmitry ROMANOV. Tables turned through the medal match. ANDERSSON met the winner of the 10m Running Target Mixed Men event ROMANOV on his first duel, outdoing him 6 to 3 points.

Then, entering the Gold Match, the Swedish shooter gave his best, shattering Ukraine’s Vladyslav PRIANISHNIKOV 6 to 2 points and claiming the Gold medal. PRIANISHNIKOV, who had won Bronze last year in Plzen, was left the Silver medal.

Russia’s Romanov won the Bronze Match

The Russian shooter Dmitry ROMANOV won the Bronze match, securing his second medal of the week after the 10m Running Target Mixed Men Gold had won two days ago. ROMANOV, who had made it into the medal match with a qualification score of 579 points, was beaten by ANDERSSON in the first duel, but then outdid the home shooter Krister HOLMBERG 6 to 3 points, bringing back home the Bronze medal.

The Medal Match formula:

The “Medals Match” has been introduced for 10m Running Target Men and Women competitions since the beginning of the 2008 season. It is a further stage in the 10m events: after the regular competition, the four best shooters proceed to a direct-elimination competition to decide the podium placements.
The first qualified faces the fourth, the second faces the third. After every shot, the shooter who has scored the highest is awarded one point. The shooter with the higher score of the pair (1 versus 4, 2 versus 3) receives one point. The shooter who receives six points is the winner of the pair.
The two winners meet then for Gold and Silver in a further duel, while the two losers keep on shooting for Bronze.

Ukraine celebrated three medals at today’s 10m Running Target Women competition, as the three Ukrainian teammates AVRAMENKO, YEVSEYENKO and ZABLOTINA won Gold, Silver and Bronze, leaving their Russian opponent STEPANOVA in fourth place.

Avramenko confirms her title.

Galina AVRAMENKO, 23, is not new to the World Championship spotlight. The young Ukrainian shooter had won also last year’s World Championship title, in Plzen. She finished today’s match with the highest qualification score of 384 points, and then led the “Medal Match” winning both the direct-elimination duels, securing her second, consecutive, title.

“It has not been easy. I did not start in the best way – said Avramenko right after the Medal Match – I always have troubles with finals, but then I settle down and everything went smoothly.”

“My next goal? Maybe I could set a new record! – said the Ukrainian Champion – Why not? I could try to shoot a full score of 400 points… we will see!”

The medal match – Ukraine left no chances to the others.

After the qualifications, three Ukrainian teammates made it to the “Medal Match” (a four-way direct-elimination round to decided the medals) together with the Russian shooter Olga Stepanova.

Galina AVRAMENKO met and beat her teammate Viktoriya ZABLOTINA 6 to 2 points in the first match. Entering the Gold Match, she duelled against the third Ukrainian shooter Tetyana YEVSEYENKO, outdoing her 6 to 5 points after a breathtaking neck and neck. With two victories out of two duels, AVRAMENKO secured Gold, leaving her teammate YEVSEYENKO the Silver.

At the same time, Viktoriya ZABLOTINA met the Russian shooter Olga STEPANOVA in a determinant Bronze match. The two athletes duelled right to the last shot, when STEPANOVA scored an unlucky 9.6 which could not stand ZABLOTINA’s 10.5.

While STEPANOVA was pushed down of the podium, 23-year old ZABLOTINA joined her teammates on a podium painted in yellow and blue, the colours of Ukraine.

The 18-year old Russian shooter is now enlisted between the favourites of the 50 meter event.

Mikhail AZARENKO of Russia, won his second consecutive Gold medal at the 2009 ISSF Running Target World Championship in Heinola. The 18-year old shooter won today’s 10m Running Target Men Junior events with 578 points, leaving his opponents seven points behind him.

AZARENKO had won also yesterday’s 10m Running Target Mixed Men competition. The young athlete had walked into this World Championship as one of the favourite junior shooters, after winning two Gold at the 2008 RT World Championship in Plzen and two Gold medals at the 2009 European Championship in Osijek. The Russian champion is also one of the favourite of the 50 meters event, which will take place the 28th and the 29th of August.

The title defender finished in second.

Silver went to the title defender, the winner of last year’s ISSF World Championship in Plzen, Laszlo BOROS of Hungary. The 19-year old shooter finished in second with a total of 571 points, after shooting a Slow Run of 287 points and a Fast Run of 284 points. Climbing the scoreboard from the fourth position, BOROS overtook Russia’s Alexander NUMENKO, 18, who won Bronze (his first international medal) with a total of 563 points.

Russia shot Team Gold with a new World Record.

Placing two athletes on the podium, the Russian Federation also gained the Team Gold medal with an overall record score. Thanks to Mikhail AZARENKO, Alexander NUMENKO and Yuri DOVGAL (fourth in the individual competition), the Russian team totalized a Golden score of 1702 points, setting a new Junior World Record that shattered the previous record of 1698 points set by the Czech team in 2003.

Finland made it to the Team Podium.

The home team, Finland, made it to the Team Podium of the 10m Running Target Men Junior competition, winning Silver thanks to 1165 points scored by Marten WESTERLUND, Sami HEIKKILA and Tomi-Pekka HEIKKILA. This was the second medal won by the team, following yesterday’s 10m Running Target Mixed Men Junior Silver.

Ukraine secured today’s Team Bronze medal, scoring 1660 points with Igor MATSKEVYCH, Oleg SALAMAKHA and Lev ZAPOTICHNYY.

Tomorrow, the Fast Run rounds and the Medal Match will close the competition.

Emil ANDERSSON of Sweden and Tetyana YEVSEYENKO of Ukraine leaded the first day of competition of the 10m Running Target Men and Women competition. During this “Day-1” the Men and Women athletes shot the Slow Run rounds, the first half of the competition, that will be followed by tomorrow’s Fast Run rounds and by the Medals Matches.

10m Running Target Men – Day-1 / Slow Run

The reigning World Champion, Sweden’s Emil ANDERSSON, 29, leaded the 10m Running Target Men Slow Run rounds. After shooting two perfect rounds of 100 points, the Swedish athlete closed the “Day-1” with a 94-point series, finishing the “Day-1” in the lead with a score of 294 points.

ANDERSSON only has one point of advantage on the following Dmitry ROMANOV of Russia, the winner of yesterday’s 10m Running Target Mixed Men event. ROMANOV ranked in second with 293 points, followed by Peter PELACH of Slovakia, third with 292 points, today.

ANDERSSON had finished in fourth at yesterday’s 10m Running Target Mixed Men event, missing the podium by one point in a determinant shoot-off. Tomorrow he will have a chance to confirm the World Championship title he had won last year in Plzen. The Swedish shooter will have to pass through the Fast Run rounds, looking for a spot in the Medal Match that will close the competition assigning the medals.

Norway secured its first medal, thanks to the 18-year old Bronze medallist Therese Holm.

The 19-year old Ukrainian shooter Liudmyla VASYLYUK won the 10m Running Target Mixed Women Junior event, claiming her first international medal ever. VASYLYUK had taken part both in the 2006 and 2008 World Championships, but she had never made it to the podium. The 19-year old athlete won today’s match with a total score of 369 points, and a four-point advantage on her followers.

Ukraine keeps on leading the Running Target international scene, as had happened at the 2008 ISSF Running Target World Championship in Plzen, last year. Silver went to VASYLYUK’s teammate, the second Ukrainian shooter, Valentyna GONCHAROVA, who closed the match in second place with a total of 365 points. GONCHAROVA had won a Junior Bronze medal in this event, in Plzen last year, and she is also one of the favourites of the 10m Running Target Women Junior event that will start tomorrow.

Today’s 10m Running Target Mixed Women Junior Bronze medal went to Norway’s Therese HOLM, 18, who secured her first international medal ever. HOLM shot the Bronze medal with a total score of 350 points, outdoing Russia’s Lyudmilla FILIPPOVA at the last series. While HOLM scored 85 points, FILIPPOVA shot a disappointing last series of 82 points, landing in fourth place with a total of 347 points. “I am so happy! – said HOLM after the match – I cannot even realize how many points of advantage I had on my followers… The important thing is that I am on the podium! It has been stressful: I had to wait the very last shot of my opponents before being sure of the medal!”
