The unbeatable German rifle shooter Sonja Pfeilschifter won today’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions Women event, claiming her second consecutive Gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in Milan.

Germany’s Sonja PFEILSCHIFTER, who won the 10m Air Rifle women event two days ago, played an excellent match at today’s 50m Rifle 3 Position competition. Qualified in fourth place with 585 points, the 38-year old German athlete climbed in the lead by firing the highest score of today’s final, 101.9 points. With a total score of 686.9 points (585+101.9), Sonja Pfeilschifter secured her second consecutive Gold medal, her 39th ISSF World Cup medal won in rifle events.

Climbing to the highest step of the podium, Pfeilschifter overtook the qualification’s leader, the Serbian shooter Lidija MIHAJLOVIC, who finished in second place winning Silver with a total score of 685.3 points (587+98.3). The 40-year old Serbian shooter, an Olympic finalist of Beijing, had won her last ISSF world cup medal (a Silver) at the 2008 world cup stage of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

With a total score of 684.1 (585+99.1) points, today’s Bronze medal went to the 22-year old Chinese shooter WAN Xiangyan, who shot her third, consecutive podium in this event out of four world cup stages since the beginning of the year. The young athlete had started the season by winning a Silver at the world cup stage of Changwon, Korea, and kept on winning at the world cup in Beijing, China, where she shot a Bronze medal in front of her spectators.

WAN fought right to the last shot against USA’s Jamie BEYERLE, who climbed from the sixth place she had on the start list, coming closer to the podium placements shot after shot. The American shooter (who celebrated her 25th birthday today) tried to find a spot on the podium, eventually finishing in fourth place with a total score of 683.7 (583+100.7) points, only 4 tenths far from the Bronze medal.

The second Chinese finalist, the winner of this year’s ISSF World Cup stages in Korea and China, YIN Wen, finished in fifth place with 681.1 (585+96.1) points, preceding Swiss’s first time finalist Andrea BRUEHLMANN who placed in sixth with 680.1 (583+97.1) points.

Sonja PFEILSCHIFTER won the 10m Air Rifle Women final match. She had set the current Final World Record here in Milan one year ago. Following her on the podium, the home athlete Petra ZUBLASING secured Silver.

The left-handed German Champion Sonja PFEILSCHIFTER, 38, claimed Gold at the 10m Air Rifle Women final round while shooting in the first competition-day of the ISSF World Cup in Rifle and Pistol events in Milan, Italy.

The German shooter, an expert of Milan’s shooting range (she had won the world cup stage held here in 2008 by setting a new final world record), shot today’s Gold with a total score of 502.0 points (399+103.0).

Pfeilschifter, a world record holder in this event, turns out to be one of the main protagonists of this year’s ISSF World Cup Series. Milan’s Gold is her second world cup medal, this year, following the Silver she had secured on the lines of the 1972 Olympic shooting range of Munich, Germany, last week.

Coming in second place, the 19-year old Petra ZUBLASING of Italy secured Silver with the support of her home spectators. She shot the highest final round of 103.4 points, totalizing a score of 501.5 points.

The young shooter, awarded as Junior European Champion last February, had never won an ISSF World Cup medal before. “I had never won a world cup medal before, it’s so good to be on the podium here in Milan, in front of all this spectators. I would not say that Milan’s is my home range, but still I feel great. I hope I will keep on shooting good results: I am studying engineering, training and working at the same time. That’s not easy!”

Bronze went to the 20-year old Chinese shooter Jieqiong XIE, who placed in third with 501.4 (398+103.4) points, just one tenth of a point less then Silver medallist ZUBLASING. XIE debuted in the ISSF World Cup series last April, at the world cup stage held in Changwon (KOR) where she won a Silver medal.

The winner of the previous ISSF World Cup stage of Munich, Ukraine’s Darya SHYTKO, 23, placed in fourth with 500.1 (398+103.4) points.
