25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men: 3 medals to China

The Rapid Fire Pistol event was ruled by the Chinese team, that placed three athletes on the podium. India was represented in the final by two shooters.

It was China’s day today, at the ISSF World Cup in Rifle and Pistol events in Sydney. The Chinese team ruled the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol men event, placing three athletes on the podium to win Gold, Silver and Bronze.

It was a new face to win the Gold medal. Li Yuehong, 20-year old, today’s youngest finalist, had never participated in an ISSF international competition, before. The young shooter took the second spot on the start list thanks a qualification score of 580 points, placing him four points behind his expert teammate Jian Zhang.

Shooting four great series, Li scored 201.4 points throughout the final, first tying and than overtaking Zhang, and ended up in first place with a total score of 781.4 points which gave him the Gold medal.

Missing more than usual, the ISSF World Cup Silver medallist of Milan 2009 Zhang Jian scored 191.9 points throughout today’s final series. Since the first series, when he scored twice in the eighth ring, he lost his margin over Li Yuehong, sliding then down in second place. The 24-year old athlete eventually won Silver with a total score of 775.9 points.

The two Chinese shooters were reached on the podium by their titled teammate Zhang Penghui, 32-year old, from Nanjing. The 2006 World Champion qualified for the match in fourth place with 577 points, and scored 194.2 points during the final, ending up in third place with a total of 771.2 points to win his twelfth World Cup medal since 1998.

The final round was than closed by a shoot-off between the two Indian teammates Gurpreet Singh and Pemba Tamang, who had closed the round with an equal score of 767.7 points. It was the 22-year old Singh to win the duel for the fourth spot by shooting-off Tamang 50.9 to 47.1 points.

2009 RT World Championship – 50m Events Results

20090831_50RTevents-1The 2009 Running Target World Championship of Heinola was closed by the 50m events. Russia’s Stepanov won both the Men events, equalling a World Record.

50m Running Target Mixed Men – Two shoot-offs closed the match.
Two shoot-offs closed an exciting 50m Running Target Mixed Men competition, at the 2009 ISSF Running Target World Championship in Heinola.
After finishing the match with a tied score of 392 points, Maxim STEPANOV of Russia met the home shooter Steffan HOLMSTROM of Finland in shoot-off for Gold. After the first shoot-off round, both the athlete had shot an equal shoot-off score of 18 points. The second shoot-off round solved the contest in favour of the 29-year old STEPANOV, who claimed Gold beating HOLMSTROM 19 to 18 points.
After scoring 391 points, Niklas BERGSTROEM of Sweden won the shoot-off for Bronze, beating 20 to 19 points the Russian shooter KOLESOV.

The Russian Federation claimed the Team Gold, totalizing a score of 1169 points scored by Maxim STEPANOV, Igor KOLESOV and Alexander IVANOV. Following only one point behind, Finland placed in second, shooting Silver with a total of 1168 points, while Team Bronze went to Czech Republic with a score of 1158 points.

50m Running Target Men – Stepanov equalled the World Record.
Russia’s Maxim STEPANOV, 29 won the 50m Running Target Men event with a total score of 596 points, equalling the World Record set by Niclai LAPIN (URS) in 1987. STEPANOV’s record score left no chances to his opponents. Finland’s Krister HOLMBERG finished in second place six points behind him, with a total of 590 points, while Bronze went to the Slovakian shooter Peter PELACH, third with 589 points after winning a shoot-off against Russia’s ROMANOV.

Thanks to STEPANOV’s record score, and to the results of his teammates ROMANOV and KOLESOV, Russia secured the Team Gold with a total score of 1768 points. HOLMBERG’s Finland finished in second place, claiming Silver with an overall score of 1752 points, while Slovakia finished in third winning Team Bronze with 1745 points.

50m Running Target Men Junior – Boros claimed Gold with a 10-point advantage.
The 19-year old Czech athlete Lazlo BOROS claimed the 50m Running Target Men Junior Gold medal at the 2009 ISSF Running Target World Championship in Heinola. The junior shooter, a multi-medallist of this Running Target World Championship, finished in the lead with a total score of 587 points, putting ten points between him and his followers.
Finland’s Tomi-Pekka HEIKKILA finished in second securing Silver with a total of 577 points, after outdoing Russia’s Mikhail AZARENKO 19 to 18 points in a shoot-off. The two-time Gold medallist AZARENKO finished in third place, winning Bronze.

The Russian Federation finished on the highest step of the Team Podium, securing Gold with a total of 1725 points. Team Silver went to Finland with 1710 points, while Bronze went to Ukraine (1689 points).

Trap Men Junior – The thrilling match is still open

20090808_tr125JUNday1_001Two shooters lead the provisory raking with a score of 73 hits out of 75 targets, but seven shooters are tied behind them. 50 targets are left to be shot, and the match is still open.

The recently awarded European Junior World Champion Paco MACHADO of Spain is leading the Trap Junior Men match after the first day of competition. After the first 75 targets, the young 19-year old athlete is leading the provisory ranking with a total score of 73 hits. MACHADO, who won the Junior title at the 2009 European Championships of Osijek last July, had participated also at the 2006 and 2007 ISSF Shotgun World Championships, placing 18th and 17th, respectively.

While the titleholder, the Italian shooter VALLIFUOCO, is not competing here in Maribor, another young and strong shooter is contending the leadership to MACHADO. Jacob TURNER of the United States of America, 20-year old, has also hit 73 targets tying MACHADO atop of the provisory Trap Men Junior Ranking. TURNER debuted this year in the ISSF World Cup Series, reaching an eighth place at the World Cup stage of Cairo, at the beginning of the 2009 season.

Following MACHADO and TURNER, seven athletes tied with a score of 72 targets. Between them, the 19-year old Finnish shooter Jesse KINNUNEN, who has taken part in all of this year’s ISSF World Cup Stages, and the 18-year old Indian Kynan CHENAI, winner of a Silver medal at last year’s Asian Championships. Both the runners-up shot three series of 24 hits today, and will get a chance to come back in the second part of the match, tomorrow.

The thrilling competition is not over yet: the 50 targets left to be shot will be determinant in deciding the medals, tomorrow.

Trap Men – An outsider tied the Olympic Champion atop of the ranking

20090808_tr125day1_001After the first 75 qualification targets, the Chinese outsider Li Yang tied to Beijing’s Olympic Champion Kostelecky in the lead of the Trap Men ranking. The title defender Diamond shot 73 targets and ranks in 10th place. The competition will continue tomorrow, with the next 50 qualification targets and the final round.

The first day of competition of the 2009 ISSF Shotgun World Championship saw the great result recorded by the Olympic Champion David KOSTELECKY (CZE). Shooting in a beautiful sunny day, with almost no wind, the Czech shooter concluded the first day of the Trap Men qualifications with a full score of 75 hits out of 75 targets. KOSTELECKY comes from a Silver medal won at the last ISSF World Cup stage in San Marino, last June. The Czech shooter, who had won a World Championship as junior shooter in 1995, is still looking for his first Gold medal after the Olympic Games of Beijing.

The Chinese outsider LI Yang, 22-year old, surprised everybody by finishing this first day of qualification with a full score of 75 hits, reaching the Olympic Champion KOSTELECKY atop of the provisory ranking of the Trap Men event. LI has never made it to an ISSF podium so far, and his best personal placement has been a 16th place at the last 2008 Olympic Games.

The title defender, the winner of the 2007 World Championships, the legendary Australian Trap shooter Michael DIAMOND (a seven-time world champion), shot a total of 73 targets today, dropping two precious targets at this morning’s first qualification round. DIAMOND currently holds the 10th place of the provisory ranking, while Italy’s champion Giovanni PELLIELO, the current number two in the World Ranking, stopped his target-counter to 72 hits finishing in 26th place.

The games are still open: the Trap Men competition will continue tomorrow, when the last 50 qualification targets will be thrown. The Trap Men final round, where the top 6 athletes will meet to fight for the medals in a 25-target round, will take place tomorrow afternoon at 5.00 PM.
