Skeet Men Junior – 15-year old Slavicek (CZE) won by one target

20090816_SK125junWiNNERnews_001Czech Republic’s Milos Slavicek won the Skeet Men Junior competition, finishing in the lead with one target of advantage on his opponents.

Milos SLAVICEK of Czech Republic is the new Skeet Men Junior World Champion. The 15-year old athlete won today’s competition with a total score of 122 hits out of 125 targets, finishing in first place with one target of advantage on his followers.

SLAVICEK, one of the youngest competitors taking part in this 2009 ISSF Shotgun World Championship, had never participated in a world-level competition, before. The 15-year old Czech athlete debuted on the international scene at the European Championship of Osijek (CRO) twenty days ago, placing in 29th.

SLVAICEK left behind him the 2007 World Championship’s Silver and Bronze medallists Marcus SVENSSON of Sweden and Wilfred BLANCHARD of the USA (the 2007 Junior World Champion Anastasios CHAPESHIS did not come to defend his title).

Marcus SVENSSON finished in second place winning is second consecutive Junior World Championship Silver medal with a total score of 121 +4 hits. The Swedish shooter outdid 4 targets to 3 the Italian athlete Angelo MOSCARIELLO in a shoot-off for the second step of the podium. MOSCARIELLO finished in third, grabbing Silver with a total of 121 +3 targets.

Vesa PIETARILA of Finland, 20, who was leading after the first 75 targets, closed his competition with a last series of 23 hits out of 25 targets. Any single drop can be fatal at the World Championship: the Finnish shooter slid down in the placements, landing in fourth place with a total score of 120 hits out of 125 targets, missing to grab podium just by one clay.

USA’s Wilfed BLANCHARD (Bronze medallist at the last World Championship) ended up in fifth place with a total score of 119 hits, followed by Sweden’s Stefan NILSSON (the 2009 European Junior Champion) who closed in sixth place with a total of 117 targets after beating Russia’s Mikhail DOVGAL in a shoot-off.

Teams: Gold to Czech Republic

SLAVICEK’s Czech Republic won the team Gold medal with an overall score of 353 hits (Milos SLAVICEK, JAkub TOMECEK, Jakub NOVOTA).

Team Silver went to the United States of America (Wilfred BLANCHARD, Jon McGRATH and Chris HAVER), with an combined score of 349 targets. Sweden placed in third winning team Bronze thanks to the 348 hits scored by Marcus SVENSSON, Stefan NILSSON and Robin GUSTAFSSON.

Skeet Men Junior – Pietarila (FIN) leaded Day-1

20090815_Sk125J_Day1Pietarila has one target of advantage on his followers. Tomorrow, the last 50 targets will decide the podium of the Skeet Men Junior event.

Vesa PIETARILA of Finland leads the Skeet Men Junior event, with one target of advantage on his followers. The 20-year old Finnish athletes only dropped two targets throughout today’s three qualification series, ending up the Day-1 with a score of 73 hits out of 75 targets.

PIETARILA, who took part in two ISSF World Cup Stages shooting neck and neck with Seniors this year, will have to fight to defend his one-target leadership throughout tomorrow’s last two series. Behind him, six shooters tied with a score of 72 hits. (Check the rankins after Day-1).

The Skeet Men Junior competition will continued tomorrow, when the last 50 targets will be thrown.

Skeet Men – Shomin (RUS) shattered all the first 75 targets

The two-time ISSF World Championship Silver medallist Valery SHOMIN, 38, from Russia, ended up the first qualification day of the Skeet Men event in the lead. SHOMIN concluded the first three qualification series with a perfect score of 75 hits out of 75 targets.

The Russian shooter leads with only one target of advantage over his opponents. Following him, the 2008 Olympic Champion Vincent HANCOCK of the USA and the Qatari shooter Nasser AL-ATTIYA ranked in second with a score of 74 hits out 75 targets.

The last 50 qualification targets and the Skeet Men Final will take place tomorrow, and SHOMIN will have to shoot at his best to defend his narrow head-start advantage.

Next to HANCOCK and AL-ATTIYA, eleven shooters tied with a qualification score of 73 hits out of 75 targets. Between them, the recently-awarded European Champion, Norway’s Tore BROVOLD, who walked into this ISSF World Championship just twenty days after shooting a record score of 150 out of 150 targets at the last European Championships of Osijek (CRO).

The title defender, Georgios ACHILLEOS of Cyprus, is also not far from SHOMIN. The Cypriot athlete scored 73 targets, and he still has 50 qualification targets to shoot.

Tomorrow’s 50 qualification targets will determinate the six shooters that will proceed to the medal match. The Final round which will assign the Skeet Men World Champion title will take place tomorrow afternoon, at 4.30 PM.

Skeet Men – World Champion Achilleos leaded the match

Cyprus’ Georgios Achilleos won today’s Skeet Men event competition at the ISSF World Cup stage in San Marino, grabbing the last World Cup Final’s qualification slot. The Cypriot shooter was followed by Kuwait’s Almutairi, and by the Norwegian shooter Brovold.

The reigning Skeet World Champion Georgios ACHILLEOS, 28, from Cyprus, won the Skeet Men competition at the ISSF World Cup in San Marino. The Cypriot shooter placed in first with a total score of 146 targets, after a qualification of 121 targets, and a perfect final of 25 hits.

“It’s great to be back atop of an ISSF podium” Said ACHILLEOS, who had won his last World Cup Gold medal at the 2008 stage of Belgrade. “It has not been easy today. We all struggled with the settings of these target machines.”

“Results speak by themselves: we shot-off to get into the final match with 123 targets, in Munich, and I won today’s match coming from a qualification of 121 hits.” Said the Cypriot champion, who won a Silver medal at the last World Cup stage of Munich.

“I am heading to the Mediterranean Games of Pescara, now. That’s my next biggest event, and I really hope to perform well even there.” Concluded ACHILLEOS, speaking about the Mediterranean Games which will take place starting from the next week.

Zaid ALMUTAIRI, shooting as fast as always, won today’s Silver medal with a total score of 145 targets. The 27-year old Kuwaiti athlete won the second world cup medal of his shooting career by shooting a strong score of 24 targets in the final, after a qualification of 121 hits.

A shoot-off to assign Bronze
The Bronze medal was assigned through a shoot-off, as Norway’s Tore BROVOLD and Germany’s Axel WEGNER ended up the final round with an equal score of 143 targets.

The Olympic Silver medallist BROVOLD won the duel for the podium, claiming Bronze with 8 hits in the shoot-off. The 1998 Olympic Champion WEGNER missed his eighth shoot-off target, shooting himself in fourth place where he landed with a total score of 143 +7 hits.

“I was tired of getting fourth places!” said the Norwegian Champion BROVOLD, smiling after the award ceremony. He had placed in fourth at the last ISSF World Cup stage of Munich “It hasn’t been easy;” He added, commenting on today’s competition; “we have been fighting with range’s settings yesterday and today. I am happy I made it to the podium…”

The second Norwegian finalist, Harald JENSEN, finished in fifth palce with a total score of 142 hits, after outdoing 6 to 5 hits in a shoot-off Denmark’s Jesper HANSEN, today’s sixth.

Skeet Men – Olympic medallist Terras shot gold at the 22nd shoot-off target

Beijing’s Olympic Bronze medallist Anthony TERRAS of France won the Skeet Men Gold after a 10-pair shoot-off, outdoing Beijing’s Silver BROVOLD of Norway, the 2000 Olympic Champion MILCHEV and the 31-year old Finnish shooter Heikki MERILUOTO.

The Olympic Bronze medallist of Beijing, France’s Anthony TERRAS, won the Skeet Men event at the ISSF World Cup in Minsk climbing on the highest step of the podium with a total score of 146 hits + 22 targets in the shoot-off. The France shooter won the medal after passing through a 10-pair shoot-off for Gold.

“I had nothing to loose, we where all tied and I only tried to give my best to succeed. I have a certain experience in long shoot-offs: I went through such a shoot-off at the Olympic Games of Beijing;” said the 23-year old athletes after shooting-off Finland’s Heikki MERILUOTO and Ukraine’s Mikola MILCHEV, who placed in second and third place, respectively.

Today’s six finalists had started the final round tied with a qualification score of 121 hits, in a clear and sunny afternoon, with calm wind, that followed yesterday’s rainy qualifications.

The first shooter to exit the quest for gold was Germany’s Thorsten HAPKE, who dropped two precious targets in fifth and sixth station, closing the final round in sixth with a total score of 144 hits.

Italy’s Valerio LUCHINI, Bronze medallist at the last ISSF World Cup in Munich, followed HAPKE by loosing a low-house clay on the fourth station placing in fifth with a total score of 145 targets.

Beijing Silver and Bronze medallists Tore BROVOLD of Norway and Anthony TERRAS of France, together with Finland’s Heikki MERILUOTO and the 2000 Olympic Champion Mikola MILCHEV of Ukraine, tied in first place by shooting a perfect final round of 25 hits and a total score of 146 targets. A four-way shoot-off for Gold was issued between them to decide the winner of the match.

The 38-year old Norwegian shooter BROVOLD was the first to leave the golden shoot-off after missing an high-house target on his second pair. Beijing’s Olympic Silver medallist closed the round in fourth place with 146 +3 targets.

MILCHEV, TERRAS and MARILUOTO kept on shooting for Gold right to the tenth pair, when the 41-year old MILCHEV missed a target placing himself in third place with a total score of 146 +19 hits.

Following him, MARILUOTO dropped a Mark on his eleventh pair, placing in second and winning Silver with 146 +21 hits, while the 23-year old TERRAS won the spectators’ applauses and the Gold medal with 146 +22 hits.

“I am so happy about this Gold!” said the France shooter, who had never won a World Cup Gold medal before. “Was I shooting fast? That wasn’t because I was nervous, that’s my way of shooting finals!”
