Olympic Champ Kostelecky finished in Second. Olympic Quota to France. Great Britain’s made it to the teams’ podium.

Italy’s Massimo Fabbrizi became the new Trap Men World Champion, today, at the 2011 ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Belgrade, Serbia, with a total score of 149 hits.

“I still can’t believe I made it. I did not check the scoreboard; I did not pay attention to my opponents. I was just focusing on my targets, and after I hit the 23rd clay I knew I had become the new World Champion. It feels great!” The Italian shooter said right after the final, hugging his coach Albano Pera.

Fabbrizi turned out to be unbeatable since the qualification rounds. The 34-year old Italian champion hit 125 targets out of 125, equalling the current World Record. A great score that placed him in first in the final round, where he hit 24 out of 25 targets to win the World Champion title with an overall score of 149 hits: another Equalled World Record.

“To hit 24 targets using one barrel only, it’s a great result for me. And to shoot two records in one match is extreme!” Massimo commented after his last shot.

“I only missed one in the final, I shot below it. I don’t know why it happened, and sincerely speaking I don’t care about it. I won the match, that’s the only important thing!” He said about missing his fifth final clay.

Fabbrizi is not new to the golden feeling of a world championship victory: the Italian shooter from Monteprandone had indeed already won an ISSF Shotgun World Championship in 2005, shooting on his home court layouts of Lonato (Italy).

“Compared to my previous victory, I have been working harder this time. I had to train more, and put more efforts in it, to finish in first here in Belgrade.”

“I dedicate this medal to my family, to the Italian Federation and to the Amra dei Carabinieri, who have been supporting me so much.” Said Fabbrizi, who will be competing at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup Final in Al Ain (UAE), the last match of the year, starting on the 30th of September. “I will have to postpone my holidays!” He concluded with a smile on his face.

OLYMPIC CHAMPION KOSTELECKY SECURES SILVER

The Silver medal went to the Olympic Champion Davi Kostelecky of Czech Republic, who finished in second place with an overall score of 146 hits. After making it into the final round with a qualification score of 122 hits passing through a shoot-off, the 36-year old Czech champion hit 24 targets straight in the final, dropping just the very last clay. Kostelecky had won a Silver medal on the same layout just a few weeks ago, during the European Championship held here in Belgrade.

BRONZE AND OLYMPIC QUOTA TO FRANCE

One target behind Kostelecky, the Bronze medal went to France’s Stephane Clamens, who also secure the Olympic Quota Place to be assigned today. The 40-year old athlete, ranked 58th in the world, surprised everybody by making it into the final (his first time in a World Championship) with 122 hits, and then scored 23 clays in the final, ending up with a total score of 145 hits. The Quota Place opens to him the doors of his fourth Olympic participation: Clemens has indeed participated in all the Olympic editions since Sydney 2000.

Two other Italians, the three-time Olympic medallist Giovanni “Johnny” Pellielo and the World Cup multi-medallist Rodolfo Viganò participated in the final match, finishing in fourth and sixth place with 144 and 142 hits, respectively. Poland’s Jaromir Wojtasiewicz, a first time finalist, closed the match between them, in fifth, with 144 total hits.

TEAMS: Italy scores a new World Record

The excellent performance of the three Italian shooters lifted Italy atop of the teams’s podium, with a new record score of 369 targets (New World Record). Czech Republic followed in second, with 362 points scored by Kostelecky, Jiri Gach and Jiri Liptak, while the teams’ Bronze went to Great Britain’s with Aaron Heading, Edward Ling and Carl Exton scoring 359 targets.

NEXT MEDAL MATCH: Trap Women

The next medal matches, the Trap Women Final, will take place on Thursday the 8th at 17.30 (GMT+1)

The Spanish shooter beat 3 to 2 hits the two-time Olympic Champion of Australia Michael Diamond. Both the shooters were awarded an Olympic Quota Place for London 2012

Spain’s Jesus Serrano won today’s Trap Men Final at the 2011 ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Maribor, finishing on the highest step of the podium after a neck and neck duel against the two-time Olympic Champion Michael Diamond.

Serrano entered the medal match in the lead, with a qualification score of 124 hits, and one target of head start on his followers. Leading throughout the first part of the match, he lost his advantage by missing three out of the last 7 targets.

Australia’s top shooter Diamond, 39, who had qualified with 123 hits, took advantage of Serrano’s defiance, and tied him with a final score of 146 hits.

The two shooters met in a shoot-off to decide the Gold medal. Then, Serrano zeroed in and beat Diamond 3 to 2 hits, securing the brightest medal with a total score of 146+3 targets, leaving the Australian the Silver with 146+2 clays. Both the shooters were awarded an Olympic Quota Place, a qualification spot for the 2012 London Games.

“I have been fighting with the light!” commented Serrano right after the shoot-off “The final took place quite late, the sun was setting behind the hills, so at the end of the match I had problems in focusing on my targets, and I missed a cl”

“I went through a black out: my vision was not ok.” Continued the Spanish shooter. “Luckily, I was able to zero in just in time for the shoot-off, and I made it.”

“A gold medal and an Olympic Quota: It feels great!” He said.

The Bronze medal went to Great Britain’s Aaron Heading, 24, winning his first World Cup medal here in Maribor. The young shooter had made it to the final with a qualification score of 122+3 hits, by passing through a shoot-off. Then, hitting 22 out of 25 targets in the final, he climbed up to the podium leaving behind him Croatia’s Josip Glasnovic (28) and India’s Mansher Singh (45), in fourth and fifth with a total score of 143 hits. Portugal’s Jose Manuel Bruno Faria followed them closing the match in sixth and last place with 142 hits.

Almost 600 shooters coming from 77 countries are competing here in Maribor in the fourth and last ISSF Shotgun World Cup Stage of the year, trying to secure an Olympic Quota Place for the 2012 London Games

The next medal match will be held the day after tomorrow, on Tuesday the 12, at 15.40 (Slovenian time).

The second Quota went to Czech Republic’s Jiri Gach, third on today’s podium.

It was Croatia’s Giovanni Cernogoraz who won today’s Trap Men final at the 2011 ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Beijing, China, finishing in first place with an overall score of 145 hits.

Together with the medal, the 28-year old shooter also secured an Olympic Quota Place, a pass to the 2012 Olympic Games.

Walking into the match in second place with a qualification score of 121 hits, Cernogoraz duelled throughout the whole medal round against the 2004 Olympic Champion Alexey Alipocv of Russia.

Hitting 24 out of 25 final targets, the Croatian shooter climbed in the lead, overtaking his Russian opponent who landed in second place with a total score of 144 hits, one target behind him.

“Before the final I was kind of nervous, but now I just feel great. Finally the medal came!” Cernogoraz said. Shooting since 1998, he had never won an ISSF World Cup medal, before.

“I had been closed to the victory several times. – He added – I even made it to the final, once. But there was always something going wrong, one or two targets missing, and I had never made it to the podium, before.”

“I trained a lot, technically, physically and psychologically, to win this Quota Place.” Explained the winner, who was ranked 64th in the world, until today.

“I will go to the Olympic Games. I won the Quota, and I will be representing my country in London, next year. That’s how it works, in Croatia.” He added.

Russia’s 35-year old Trap champion Alexey Alipov, who had started the match in the lead with 123 hits, ended up in second place, securing the Silver medal with an overall score of 144 targets.

Alipov was followed by Czech Republic’s Jiri Gach, 41, who finished in third place with a total score of 143 (120+23) hits, winning the Bronze medal and the second Olympic Quota to be awarded today. The Czech Shooter, ranked 44th in the world, had finished on an ISSF podium just once, before, back in 1998.

The three shooters who had made the final through a shoot-off with 119 targets, Slovakia’s Marian Kovacocy, Czech Republic Jiri Liptak and Russia’s Igor Chebanov finished in fourth, fifth and sixth places with 137, 136 and 133 total hits, respectively.

The Trap Men Final closed this year’s ISSF Shotgun World Cup Stage in Beijing. After ten days, five competitions and ten Olympic Quotas assigned, the ISSF World Cup Series moves now to Fort Benning, USA, where a Rifle & Pistol stage will be held starting from May 14.

“Happy Ending” is probably the sentence that better describes today’s Trap Men Final at the 2010 ISSF World Cup Final in Izmir, Turkey.

It was indeed a Turkish shooter, Oguzhan Tunzun, 27-year old, who won the Gold medal and the title, triggering the loudest celebrations of this year’s ISSF World Cup Series among the hundreds of spectators following the match at the shooting range of Izmir.

An odd-defying result, especially if considering that Tunzun was not even qualified for the match. The Turkish athlete was indeed participating in this ISSF World Cup Final thanks to a wild card, a qualification pass accorded to the Final’s organizing Committee.

“I believed in it, I could feel it was possible!” the Turkish athlete said after the match, hugging his coach Diego.

Boosted by the home court advantage Tunzun gave his best in the qualification rounds. In spite of being ranked 38th in World, the home shooter scored out Olympic and World Champions, entering the final match with a 120 hits, just one target behind the qualification’s leader, the Russian Champion Alexey Alipov.

Then Tunzun zeroed in, shooting betters than anybody else during the final match. Hitting 24 out of 25 targets he finished on the highest step of the podium with a total score of 144 hits, bringing the last Gold medal of this ISSF World Cup Final to the host country.

“My first goal was to make it into the final;” commented the athlete “Than, once I qualified, I decided I had to grab the chance, and I tried my best.”

“Friends of mine flew in from Istanbul, this morning, just to follow my match, I could not delude them!” the new title holder added smiling.

Tuzun was not new to the flashlight of success. He had won an ISSF Junior World Championship at the age of 16, in 1999, and he had made it to the 2009 World Championship’s podium in 2009, securing a Bronze medal. He had reached his best ISSF placement in 2004, claiming Gold at the World Cup Stage held in Sydney that year.

“My next goal? An Olympic Quota Place” Tunzun concluded.

“Oguzhan has been working a lot on his shooting. He has been there all the season, between the bests, just a few targets far from the top” Diego Gasperini, his coach, said after the match “He missed the World Championship final, but he showed his skills today, in front of his home spectators, winning the first ever World Cup Final for Turkey!”

Alipov eventually placed in second, securing the Silver medal with a total score of 143 (121+23) hits after outdoing Australia’s Adam Vella 2 to 1 hits in a shoot-off for the second step of the podium.

While Vella wore the Bronze with 143 (120+23) targets, his teammate Michael Diamond, the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Champion, landed in fourth with 142 (119+23) hits after missing a couple of crucial targets in the second part of the final match.

Italy’s Muro De FIlippis, the winner of this year’s ISSF World Cup Final in Lonato, closed the round in fifth place with 137 (119+19) hits, while the 2008 Olympic Champion David Kostelecky closed the match in sixth with 136 (117+19) hits.

“2010 is the year of Spain!” European people say when speaking about sport, thinking about football, cycling and motors, and from today on this sentence also refers to the shooting sport, thanks to Alberto Fernandez, 27, from Madrid, who become the new Trap Men world champion, winning Spain’s first Olympic Quota Place (a qualification card for the 2012 London Games)

Fernandez won all, this year. Crowned European Champion just a few weeks ago in Kazan (RUS), the Spanish athlete won the today’s World Championship with a total score of 143 hits out of 150 targets, adding a new title to his medal showcase, and becoming the first Spanish athlete to be qualified for the London 2012 Games.

Squeezing into today’s final round through a shoot-off with 121+2 hits after the qualification, the 27-year old Spanish shooter climbed up the scoreboard by hitting 22 out of 25 targets during the final match, leaving behind his titled opponents.

“I am so happy, this is my best result ever. This is a dream which becomes true” Said Fernandez, surrounded by his numerous teammates (the Spanish team brought here in Munich 40 shooters) while interviewed by the Eurovision Network “I will go to the Games, this is simply great!”

The Silver medal went to the 2004 Olympic Champion, Russia’s Alexei Alipov, who celebrated his birthday (he will turn 35 in 3 days) with an Olympic Quota Place, a pass for the 2012 Games “This is a nice birthday present!” said the Russian champion “I am closer to the next Olympics, and this is the best thing that I could present myself!” Qualified for the medal match with 122 hits, Alipov hit 20 targets in the final, ending up with a total score of 142 targets. Then, he had to shoot-off for Silver against Czech Republic Liptak, eventually outdoing him by 2 to 1 hits.

“I will definitely have to train more for shoot-offs!” said smiling the Bronze medallist, Czech Republic’s Jiri Liptak, 28, who secured a spot on the podium and an Olympic Quota Places with 142+1 hits “My teammates were kidding me just yesterday, saying that I am too old and that it was time for me to win something. I guess I surprised them, now!” The Czech shooter wasn’t indeed one of the favourite to win: ranked 18th in the world, he had never made it into a world-level final, before.

Italy’s Giovanni Pellielo, holding three world titles won in nineties, ended up in fourth place, securing a Quota Place that could warranty him the participation in his sixth Olympics, in 2012. The 40-year old athlete had led the qualification with 123 hits out of 125 targets, but then missed 5 targets out of the first 10 during the final match, landing in fourth with a total score of 141 hits.

He was followed in fifth by China’s Li Yajun, who grabbed the last available Quota with a total score of 140 clays, while USA’s first time finalist Jacob Turner ended up in sixth with 139 hits, missing the Olympic qualification by one target.

“I wanted to thank my coach Albano Pera, and I think that winning a Gold medal is the best way to do it!” Said Mauro De Filippis, the Italian shooter who won today’s Trap Men Final at the last shot, winning a four-way shoot-off for the Gold medal.

“Albano has always believed in me throughout all these years, and he gave me this chance to compete here, in my home country. I am glad I made it!” continued the 29-year old Italian shooter, who had never won an ISSF medal before.

De Filippis won a breathtaking match, today, turning the tables of a competition which did not start in the best way for him. Qualified throughout a shoot off with the lowest score (119 targets) he simply gave his best throughout the final round, hitting 24 out of 25 final targets. As his teammate Viganò who had been leading the match since the first shot missed his last two targets, De Fillippis catch him up, making it into a four-way shoot-off for the Gold medal.

Zeroing in, De Filippis did not miss the Golden chance, and turned out to be the strongest in the shoot-off, outdoing Spain’s Fernandez, a disappointed Viganò, and Croatia’s Josip Glasnovic, securing the Gold medal with a total score of 143+7 points.

“When I passed through the first shoot-off, I regrouped and tried to stay calm. I had nothing to loose. I was not feeling too much pressure then, I enjoyed the competition and the great experience to be in such a high level match!” Said the Italian shooter “It’s simply great to win my first World Cup here in Italy!”

Croatia’s Josip Glasnovic, 27, missed his seventh shoot-off target, and was left in second with a total score of 143+6 targets. The Croatian shooter has won his last ISSF medal, a Bronze, here in Lonato during the 2005 ISSF World Championship.

De Filippis’ teammate Rodolfo Viganò grabbed the Bronze, loosing the Gold medal at the last spine chilling shot. The 39-year old Italian shooter, coming back to an ISSF final after missing since a few years, led the match right to the 23rd target, missing then the last two clays and finishing in the shoot-off. Eventually, he secured the Bronze medal with 143+4 targets, leaving Spain’s Fernandez in fourth with 143+3 hits.

“I simply lost that last target. It’s painful to lose a Gold medal in that way.” Said Viganò right after the shoot off “At the same time, I am happy that I made it to the podium. I have been in the national team for almost 23 years, now. – Continued the Italian shooter, who had won several ISSF World Cup medals in the nineties – And Loanto’s is my home range. I was glad to be here today, to compete in front of my people!”
Alipov scored 144 out o f150 targets, winning his second ISSF World Cup medal of the season.

The 2004 Olympic Champion and 2008 Olympic Bronze medallist Alexey Alipov of Russia, 34, won today’s Trap Men Final at the ISSF World Cup in Shotgun events in Dorset (UK). Alipov left no chances to his opponents, hitting 23 out of 25 targets during the final round, while his opponents dropped several targets.

“I made it into the final passing through a shoot-off, and I was really nervous – said Alipov right after the medal ceremony. After scoring 121 targets during the qualifications, he squeezed into the final match winning a shoot-off with 10 targets – As the final started I found my rhythm, and I calmed down controlling each and every target. This is my second podium, this year, I couldn’t be happier!” concluded Alipov, who had placed in second at the last World Cup Stage in Beijing.

The three Olympic medallists of the 2008 Games in Beijing fought for today’s medals, during today’s Trap Men final, winning the applauses of the numerous English spectators crowding Dorset’s final range. Shooting head to head with Alipov, Italy’s Pellielo and Czech Republic’s Kostelecky tried to climb upon the highest step of the podium.

Italy’s Giovanni Pellielo, Olympic Silver of Beijing, started the final match in the lead with the highest qualification score of 123 hits. But the 40-year old Italian champion quickly slid down in the placements by dropping two out of the first three targets, eventually landing in sixth and last place with a total score of 139 targets (123+16).

Beijing’s Olympic Champion Davi Kostelecky of Check Republic, shot neck and neck with Alipov right to the twenty-fourth final target, when he missed one finishing in a shoot-off for the Silver medal against China’s Yu Xiaokai.

21-year old Yu, who had never made it into an ISSF World Cup final round before, did not hesitate in front of the Olympic Champion, and hit his first shoot-off target. Kostelecky shooting in second, dropped his target, placing himself in third place to wear the Bronze medal with 143+1 targets. Yu, surrounded by his teammates, climbed on the second step of the podium, winning his first ISSF medal with a total score of 143+2 targets.

The home shooter Aaron Heading won the applauses of the British spectators, finishing his first ISSF final round ever in fourth place with 142 hits (after squeezing into the final with 121+10 targets). He was followed by Spain’s Alberto Fernandez, fifth with 140 hits.
He claimed Gold with four targets of advantage on Russia’s Alipov and USA’s Hadden.

The 2004 Olympic Bronze medallist of Athens Adam Vella of Australia won the Trap Men competition at the ISSF World Cup in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events in Beijing, today.

The 38-year old Australian shooter finished atop of the podium with a total score of 143 hits, leaving his opponents four targets behind him. Walking into the final round in first place with 121 qualification targets, Vella was not bothered by the numerous “no birds” occurring during the final round, and did not lose his concentration. Zeroing in, he shattered 22 clays, securing Gold with a total score of 143 hits. Shooting next to him, Olympic Champions of the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 Games could not reach him, today.

Missing two clays within the first four final targets, the 2004 Olympic Champion and 2008 Olympic Bronze medallist Alexey Alipov, 34, had to fight against USA’s Ryan Hadden, 30, to secure today’s Silver. The Russian athlete made it to the second step of the podium with a total score of 139 (120+19) hits, by a narrow advantage of one target over Hadden, who secured Bronze with 138 (118+20) hits.

The final round then was closed by a shoot-off for the fourth place involving three Olympic Gold medals. The 1996 and 2000 Olympic Champion Michael Diamond of Australia, 37, met and beat the 2008 Olympic Champion of Beijing David Kostelecky of Czech Republic 8 to 7 hits. Diamond, currently ranked first in the World Ranking, had won the 2009 ISSF World Cup Final held here in Beijing.

Following them in sixth and last place, Kuwait’s Naser Meqlad could not find his rhythm during the final round, probably due to the numerous “no-birds”. The 27-year old athlete, who had made it into the final with the highest qualification score of 121 targets, hit 13 clays during the final closing with a total score of 134 hits.
