August 11th, 2009 4 comments

20090811_SK75JUNIORGOLD_001Two world records were shattered during today’s Skeet Women Junior competition.

The Swedish shooter Therese LUNDQVIST won the Skeet Women Junior event establishing a breathtaking new Junior World Record of 74 hits out of 75 targets, shattering the 72-hits record which resisted since 2005 (set by USA’s Haley DUNN).

“It’s unbelievable! The title and the record, it’s great! This is not only a new World Records, it’s also a personal best, I had never shot such a score, before!” said the 19-year old Therese LUNDQVIST, the new Skeet Junior World Champion.

“First the Europeans and now the World Championship, this is a great moment for me, I am highly motivated!” continued LUNDQVIST, who had won the European Championship that took place in Osijek (CRO) two weeks ago.

“I will compete in a national competition, and then I will take some time off. I am staring the university in September!” concluded the 18-year old Swedish shooter, smiling in front of the podium.

The Silver medal went to the American shooter Amber ENGLISH, 19, who finished in second place with a score of 71 hits.

Natalia PANAS of Russia, 17-year old, taking part in her first ISSF international competition ever, centred the podium winning the Bronze medal with a total score of 69 targets.

USA wins the team Gold
The USA team (Amber ENGLISH, Alexander CHIANG, Caitlin CONNOR) finished atop of the Skeet Women Junior’s team podium with a record score of 204 targets. The three teammates cancelled the previous World Record of 198 targets shot by Russia at the 2007 World Championship in Nicosia (CYP)

Russia (Natalia PANAS, Maria MELESHCHENKO, Svetlana NEZNAMOVA) won Silver ranking 12 targets behind USA, with a total score of 192 targets, while Poland (Aleksandra JARMOLINSKA, Agnieszka     SIERACKA, Natalia SZAMREJ) secured Bronze with a total of 191 hits.

Trap Men Junior – The thrilling match is still open

20090808_tr125JUNday1_001Two shooters lead the provisory raking with a score of 73 hits out of 75 targets, but seven shooters are tied behind them. 50 targets are left to be shot, and the match is still open.

The recently awarded European Junior World Champion Paco MACHADO of Spain is leading the Trap Junior Men match after the first day of competition. After the first 75 targets, the young 19-year old athlete is leading the provisory ranking with a total score of 73 hits. MACHADO, who won the Junior title at the 2009 European Championships of Osijek last July, had participated also at the 2006 and 2007 ISSF Shotgun World Championships, placing 18th and 17th, respectively.

While the titleholder, the Italian shooter VALLIFUOCO, is not competing here in Maribor, another young and strong shooter is contending the leadership to MACHADO. Jacob TURNER of the United States of America, 20-year old, has also hit 73 targets tying MACHADO atop of the provisory Trap Men Junior Ranking. TURNER debuted this year in the ISSF World Cup Series, reaching an eighth place at the World Cup stage of Cairo, at the beginning of the 2009 season.

Following MACHADO and TURNER, seven athletes tied with a score of 72 targets. Between them, the 19-year old Finnish shooter Jesse KINNUNEN, who has taken part in all of this year’s ISSF World Cup Stages, and the 18-year old Indian Kynan CHENAI, winner of a Silver medal at last year’s Asian Championships. Both the runners-up shot three series of 24 hits today, and will get a chance to come back in the second part of the match, tomorrow.

The thrilling competition is not over yet: the 50 targets left to be shot will be determinant in deciding the medals, tomorrow.

Trap Men – An outsider tied the Olympic Champion atop of the ranking

20090808_tr125day1_001After the first 75 qualification targets, the Chinese outsider Li Yang tied to Beijing’s Olympic Champion Kostelecky in the lead of the Trap Men ranking. The title defender Diamond shot 73 targets and ranks in 10th place. The competition will continue tomorrow, with the next 50 qualification targets and the final round.

The first day of competition of the 2009 ISSF Shotgun World Championship saw the great result recorded by the Olympic Champion David KOSTELECKY (CZE). Shooting in a beautiful sunny day, with almost no wind, the Czech shooter concluded the first day of the Trap Men qualifications with a full score of 75 hits out of 75 targets. KOSTELECKY comes from a Silver medal won at the last ISSF World Cup stage in San Marino, last June. The Czech shooter, who had won a World Championship as junior shooter in 1995, is still looking for his first Gold medal after the Olympic Games of Beijing.

The Chinese outsider LI Yang, 22-year old, surprised everybody by finishing this first day of qualification with a full score of 75 hits, reaching the Olympic Champion KOSTELECKY atop of the provisory ranking of the Trap Men event. LI has never made it to an ISSF podium so far, and his best personal placement has been a 16th place at the last 2008 Olympic Games.

The title defender, the winner of the 2007 World Championships, the legendary Australian Trap shooter Michael DIAMOND (a seven-time world champion), shot a total of 73 targets today, dropping two precious targets at this morning’s first qualification round. DIAMOND currently holds the 10th place of the provisory ranking, while Italy’s champion Giovanni PELLIELO, the current number two in the World Ranking, stopped his target-counter to 72 hits finishing in 26th place.

The games are still open: the Trap Men competition will continue tomorrow, when the last 50 qualification targets will be thrown. The Trap Men final round, where the top 6 athletes will meet to fight for the medals in a 25-target round, will take place tomorrow afternoon at 5.00 PM.

10m Air Pistol Man – China claimed two spots on the podium

20090420_AP60 China’s SHI Xinglong, 32, won gold at the 10m Pistol Men medal match at the second stage of the ISSF World Cup Series held in Beijing.
SHI shot 683.0 points (582+101.0), climbing from the fifth place to win his second medal in this event, after the Bronze he secured at the first leg of the ISSF World Cup Series in Changwon, Korea, last week.

Shi’s team-mate MAI Jiajie, 21-year old, followed his older team-mate on the podium by shooting silver with 682.8 points (582+100.8). The young athlete won several junior awards, like a bronze at the 2006 ISSF World Championships of Zagreb and a gold at the 2007 Asian Championships, but he had never made into the senior team to compete in a world cup before.

The long experienced 38-year old shooter Yury DAUHAPOLAU finished on the podium grabbing Bronze at the last shot with a total score of 682.5 points (583+99.5). Belarus’ pistol champion came from a fourth place at the European Championships, held last February in Prague, and gave his best to secure a spot on the podium here in Beijing. Starting in second place after the qualifications, he shot neck and neck against the two Chinese team-mates right to the end. An unlucky shot, an 8.7 fired on his ninth competition shot, pushed him in third place, where he closed the match only 3 tenths behind China’s Mai.

Rashid YUNUSMETOV, the Kazakh shooter who won the 50m Pistol event held two days ago, made into his second consecutive medal match. His qualification score of 581 points, and a final of 98.0 points, stopped him in eight place.

Germany’s Patrik LENGERER, 27, finished the first final round of his career in fourth place with 681.5 pts (585+96.5). He was followed by Russia’s Vladimir GONTCHAROV, fifth with 680.6 pts (582+98.6), and by Pavol KOPP of Slovakia, sixth with 680.5 pts (582+99.5). Denis KOULAKOV, the second Russian shooter, placed seventh with 680.2 pts (581+99.2).
